Radiation Oncology
Radiation therapy is a standard course of treatment for patients with many types of cancer. Novel technologies have led to the development of highly precise techniques and more targeted radiation treatments. This spares the loss of healthy tissue and reduces the risk of side effects for patients. The radiation oncology team at NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Westchester has decades of experience treating all types of cancer using the latest radiation therapy techniques.
Radiation therapy is given at NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester and may include the following:
- Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), which shapes beams of radiation at different intensities to target the tumor
- Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), which combines traditional radiation treatment with a simultaneous computed tomography (CT) scan to allow for greater precision and accuracy
- Hypofractionated ("short course") radiation therapy, which provides patients with a higher dose of external beam radiation over a shorter period of time, to reduce the duration of treatment
- Stereotactic radiosurgery, which administers the total dose of radiation in a single session, or several smaller doses, over the course of several days, and uses a focused beam to target the area
