Stroke Care from a World-Class Team

Why Choose Us

Taking action at the first signs of a stroke and seeking prompt treatment is vital to prevent the death of brain tissue and to improve the chance of recovery. At NewYork-Presbyterian, we are recognized leaders in stroke treatment and research. Our multiple Stroke Centers were among the earliest programs to be designated through New York State as primary stroke centers.

If you suspect you or a loved one is having a stroke, call 9-1-1 immediately.

To recognize common signs of a stroke, remember to BE FAST. This phrase represents the following warning signs of a stroke, and reminds you to move quickly if you notice any of them:

  • Balance: If a person suddenly stumbles or loses their balance
  • Eyes: Sudden blurred, double, or loss of vision
  • Face drooping: Loss of muscle control or numbness on one side of the face, leading to a drooping appearance
  • Arms: Inability to fully lift one arm or arm weakness
  • Speech: Slurring, trouble speaking, or strange speech
  • Time: Time is of the essence when it comes to treating a stroke, so call 911 immediately if you notice any stroke symptoms

Our Expertise

Our Approach to Care
  • Joint Commission Certification: NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has a network of stroke centers certified by the Joint Commission. We offer the full range of advanced stroke care at our Comprehensive Stroke Centers, NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. We offer thrombectomy services at our Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Centers at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian Queens. NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester and NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley are our four Primary Stroke Centers.
  • This integrated network of stroke centers ensures that patients receive the most appropriate level of care as quickly as possible and our Quality Measures and Outcomes demonstrate the high standards across all our centers. The Joint Commission’s gold seal is awarded to institutions that provide the most advanced stroke care to patients with exceptional, around-the-clock treatment. For more information on the Joint Commission and American Heart Association’s Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Center, visit www.jointcommission.org.
  • Team care: We have specially trained neurologists, neurosurgeons, neurocritical care specialists, and nurses onsite 24/7 who work together as a team to care for our stroke patients
  • Advanced treatment: We use the latest technologies to diagnose and treat strokes accurately and effectively, including specialized monitoring, medical therapies, and minimally invasive surgical treatments
  • Neuro-ICUs: Our neurological intensive care units (neuro-ICUs) provide monitoring around the clock and specialized treatment for our most critically ill patients. Our neuro-ICUs are among the few in the world with dedicated scanners within each unit, enabling us to perform immediate imaging of the brain. We use specialized medical and surgical treatments to minimize immediate and delayed brain damage and maximize each patient’s chance of full recovery.
  • Early rehabilitation: Our Center for Stroke Rehabilitation integrates rehabilitation as early as possible, using state-of-the-art treatments
  • Clinical trials: Our investigators lead and participate in national clinical trials to improve stroke care and outcomes. Our patients may be able to participate in research studies evaluating new stroke treatments, stroke prevention efforts, and stroke recovery approaches. We also have access to many exciting clinical trials that other centers do not, a benefit for patients who are not eligible for more standard therapies.
  • A leading center for patient transfers: Many patients who have had a stroke are transferred from other hospitals to our centers because we provide advanced care for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke that is not available in many other hospitals. Physicians wishing to transfer a patient may call 1-800-NYP-STAT (1-800-697-7828), 24/7, to arrange for a transfer.
