Advances in Pediatric Cardiology

In May 2018, Columbia Children’s Health and NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital was recognized as an official Pediatric Marfan Center by the Marfan Foundation. Under the direction of Michael P. DiLorenzo, MD, and Emile A. Bacha, MD, of the Divisions of Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery, respectively, this multidisciplinary program provides a subspecialty medical home for pediatric patients with Marfan syndrome, as well as other connective tissue disorders.

Marfan syndrome is a connective tissue disorder that has multisystem involvement; as a result, coordinating care among many subspecialty providers can be burdensome for patients and families.

The Pediatric Marfan Center provides access to providers in nearly every discipline of pediatric medicine and a centralized system to help coordinate care among all services. The program assists in coordinating appointments with various subspecialty providers. Kathy Gilmartin, Marfan Program Coordinator, helps patients and their families navigate through the multitude of subspecialty appointments they will require. Patients are actively involved in their care plan and are closely monitored by their physicians to ensure that they are receiving optimal care.
