NewYork-Presbyterian has awarded more than $3 million in new funding to community-based organizations (CBOs) to address social determinants of health in neighborhoods in New York City and Westchester that struggle with high rates of health disparities.

The innovative two-year grant, called the Community Fund, aims to support CBOs by providing funding for both targeted and scaled programs that address some of New Yorkers’ immediate and longer-term social needs, as well as work that seeks to change the underlying conditions shaping health disparities.

“NewYork-Presbyterian is proud to support our community-based organizations as we work together to improve the health of the communities we serve,” said Anne Sperling, vice president of Government and Community Affairs at NewYork-Presbyterian. “Health and wellness start in the homes and communities in which we live, and the Community Fund will help us address some of the challenges many New Yorkers face every day that impact their overall well-being.”

The award process follows the 2022 NewYork-Presbyterian Community Health Needs Assessment, a triennial report that uses public data and individual feedback to understand the needs, assets, and priorities of the communities, identifying health disparities among residents. After extensive community and provider feedback – including surveys of over 1,200 community members in six languages, focus groups, and interviews with local community leaders – the hospital was able to pinpoint neighborhoods in New York City and Westchester with significant gaps in three primary areas: Social isolation, Housing Insecurity, and Unemployment and Economic Recovery.

The selected organizations have demonstrated exceptional commitment and excellence in addressing these critical areas, aligning seamlessly with the mission and objectives of the Community Fund. These funded programs will extend their support to communities in Corona, Queens; Crown Heights, Brooklyn; Lower East Side & Chinatown, Manhattan; Washington Heights, Manhattan, and Mount Vernon and Peekskill in Westchester County. This strategic allocation of resources will make a meaningful difference in the lives of residents across these diverse neighborhoods.
