Madison Wells' Story
I had been living with seizures all my life and I said, ‘Enough is enough.
Doctors knew what was wrong with Maddy Wells: a lesion in her brain was causing debilitating epileptic seizures. The problem was, operating to remove the lesion could result in even greater harm, like loss of speech. But in 2012, NewYork-Presbyterian was confident that new brain-mapping techniques could make surgery safe enough to perform.
In an initial surgical procedure using electrodes, the surgical team carefully mapped out a path to Maddy's lesion avoiding areas that needed to stay intact. Then on March 27, 2012 ("a day I'll never forget" according to Maddy) they removed the lesion. Three months after the surgery, Maddy was seizure-free and has been so ever since.
