NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester Behavioral Health Center offers a special track for Orthodox Jewish patients designed to enhance their comfort level during hospitalization. The inpatient unit is open to adults 18 years of age and over with general psychiatric disorders, and addresses the unique needs of patients requiring kosher meals and other cultural accommodations. A flexible schedule allows opportunities for religious observance.
Treatment Program
Each patient is carefully assessed, and individualized treatment plans are developed in consultation with referring clinicians, family members, and the patient's other supports in the community. The treatment program includes a full range of clinical services, including:
- Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation
- Individual, group, and family therapy
- Medication management
- Health education
- Discharge planning
Therapeutic Environment
The unit offers a full schedule of educational, therapeutic, and recreational groups, with appropriate gender separation for certain activities, and incorporates time for daily religious observance. Program adjustments are made for Sabbath and special holidays, and flexible visiting hours are accommodated. Staff members have received specialized training regarding cultural sensitivity, religious rituals and requirements, and patient expectations.
Kosher dietary restrictions are strictly followed in the dining room and throughout the unit at all times. Patient bedrooms and bathrooms are separated by gender. Religious supplies, including prayer books, are provided. Tefillin are provided as needed on request. A special comfort room is available for family members and guests visiting patients.
Treatment Team
The specially trained staff provides expert psychiatric care in a discreet, comfortable environment while understanding and respecting the emotional, cultural, and spiritual needs of the patient population. An interdisciplinary team of professionals, including psychiatrists, social workers, nursing staff, and psychosocial rehabilitation specialists, meet daily with patients to review and revise individual treatment plans and goals. Rabbis are available to meet regularly with patients to provide counseling. Team assignments give special consideration to cultural and religious sensitivities.
Financial Information
