Gynecologic conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, and abnormal uterine bleeding can affect patient's lives in many ways. In some cases, these conditions are best treated with gynecologic surgery.
Our gynecologic surgeons have subspecialty expertise in endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic reconstructive surgery, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. This includes laparoscopic and robotic gynecologic surgery, pediatric and adolescent gynecology, and LGBTQ+ and transgender health.
What is Gynecologic Surgery?
What is Gynecologic Surgery?Gynecologic surgery is the treatment or repair of a medical condition affecting the female reproductive system that requires an incision to access the affected organ or structure. Gynecologic surgery includes procedures involving the organs and structures of the female pelvic region: the uterus, ovaries, cervix, fallopian tubes, vagina, and vulva.
The experienced gynecologic surgeons at NewYork-Presbyterian choose from various approaches, depending on the patient's condition and general health. These approaches may include traditional open surgery, which may involve a larger incision, or minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, where the surgeon uses a small camera or imaging techniques and miniaturized instruments to complete the surgery through one or more small incisions.
Examples of common gynecologic surgery include:
- Hysterectomy - removal of the uterus and, in some cases, the fallopian tubes and ovaries
- Myomectomy to remove uterine fibroids
- Tumor resection (removal) in gynecologic cancers of the breast, uterus, ovaries, cervix, and vagina
- Laparoscopic (minimally invasive) or open cystectomy for ovarian cysts
- Repair of pelvic organ prolapse
- Endometrial ablation to address abnormal bleeding
- Cesarean section delivery
