A sound and restful sleep is fundamental to our health and well-being. Yet for millions of Americans, sleep is regularly interrupted or insufficient. To address the needs of this population, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center has established a new Center for Sleep Medicine (http://weill.cornell.edu/sleepcenter/) one of the largest academic medical programs of its kind in the country dedicated to providing comprehensive diagnosis and treatment.

Injecting a gene into patients with advanced heart failure may substantially improve clinical outcomes, according to phase II results of the multicenter CUPID (Calcium Up-Regulation by Percutaneous Administration of Gene Therapy in Cardiac Disease) trial presented today at the 2010 American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Chicago.

A novel genomic blood test can be developed to detect or predict multi-organ dysfunction after mechanical circulatory-support-device implantation in heart failure patients, a new study has found. The preliminary feasibility study was conducted at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. Results were presented today at the 2010 American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Chicago.

NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is the only medical center in the United States to offer minimally invasive liver donation for pediatric transplantation. Surgeons use a laparoscopic technique to remove a section of liver from a living donor for implantation in a pediatric patient — typically a parent donating to their child. The innovative approach promises dramatically improved recovery for the donor.

Dr. Jeffrey W. Moses, an internationally recognized leader in clinical innovation and research, is assuming an expanded role as director of interventional cardiology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. The new program spans the Hospital's two major medical centers -- NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Men concerned about their health will soon have a new health facility designed especially for them, thanks to the generosity of New York's pre-eminent philanthropist Iris Cantor, who donated $20 million toward its establishment. The first of its kind in the region, the Iris Cantor Men's Health Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center will provide one-stop comprehensive medical services for men. The Center is scheduled to open in 2012.

The Hebrew Home at Riverdale has joined the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System as an affiliate member. Formalized on February 1, 2010, the new affiliation reinforces and builds on the longterm relationship between The Hebrew Home and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has created one of the nation's first hospitalist positions dedicated to providing mental health care for inpatients admitted for medical and surgical conditions. The position is named for Barbara Jonas, a longtime mental health advocate, former practicing psychotherapist, and supporter of arts and education. Mrs. Jonas, with her husband, Donald, gave $500,000 to honor Hospital President and CEO Dr. Herbert Pardes for his longstanding commitment to addressing mental health and behavioral issues in medicine.
