Two young physician-scientists in the Division of Cardiology at Weill Cornell Medical College each won a highly competitive award presented at the recent 2001 American Heart Association meeting in Anaheim.

Dr. Anne Moore, a New York Weill Cornell oncologist and authority on breast cancer, will receive the Special Recognition Award from Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert (JALBCA).

One of the 40 national finalists in this year’s Intel Science Talent Search contest is Dmitriy Aronov, a Stuyvesant High School student who pursued his project in the lab of Dr. Jonathan D. Victor, a Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medical College and an authority on mathematical approaches to vision and neuroscience.

In a step that will take geriatric education at Weill Cornell Medical College to a whole new level, the College has been awarded a four-year, $2 million grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation to support and strengthen its educational programs in geriatric medicine.

A delegation of dignitaries, scientists, and media representatives will dedicate the Cornell Biodiversity Laboratory at Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic on March 17. The lab, located on a 1,555-acre ecological reserve set aside by the Punta Cana Ecological Foundation, will allow scientists and students from Cornell University and from Weill Cornell Medical College's Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine to perform innovative research on how natural herbal and botanical products can benefit human health.

In multiple myeloma, plasma cells in the blood become malignant and attack the bone, causing painful fractures and, often, death. Nearly 14,000 Americans are diagnosed each year with the disease, and over 11,000 die. Multiple myeloma accounts for approximately 10% of cancers of the blood.

Joseph J. Fins, M.D., F.A.C.P., a nationally known medical ethicist, has received the Wholeness of Life Award from The Healthcare Chaplaincy, a 40-year-old organization that provides pastoral care, education, and research to 21 New York-area healthcare institutions, including NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has pledged a $500,000 challenge grant over the next three years to help create a $1 million endowment for the Gateways to the Laboratory Program, a joint endeavor of Weill Cornell Medical College, The Rockefeller University, and Sloan-Kettering Institute.
