Innovative methods to expand the donor pool for children and adults

Given the US organ shortage, the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at NewYork-Presbyterian is committed to finding innovative ways to increase the chance of a patient getting a liver transplant for children and adults. Our multidisciplinary liver transplant program offers the following services for children and adults with all stages of liver disease:

For patients waiting for a life-saving liver transplant, living donor liver transplantation offers many benefits including shorter wait times, faster recovery times, and better outcomes compared to deceased donor liver transplant. As one of the largest and most experienced programs in North America, our center has performed more than 400 living donor liver transplantations for adult and pediatric recipients. Learn more.

As the first program in the nation to offer minimally invasive laparoscopic donor surgery and the only program in the Northeast to offer fully laparoscopic liver removal surgery, donors at our center report less pain, shorter hospital stays, less blood loss, accelerated recovery, and improved quality of life compared with traditional transplantation methods.

We perform liver transplants from both deceased and living donors. Our team works with you to determine the best option, optimizing your overall health while waiting for a liver and working to achieve long-term survival with the highest quality-of-life possible.

As the US continues to face a major organ shortage, our center is spearheading innovative methods to expand our living donor liver transplant program even further by prioritizing the development of a liver paired exchange program.

Since the liver has a unique ability to regenerate itself, it can sometimes be used to transplant 2 different patients. As one of the few centers in the United Sates to utilize split liver transplantation, we are helping to increase the donor pool for children and adults.
