Learn More About Our Patient Navigators

We know it can be overwhelming to keep track of everything you need to do as part of your health maintenance and cancer care. To guide you, the patient navigators at NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester (formerly Lawrence Hospital) ensure that you have timely, appropriate access to the right care team and services.

  • Our Breast Cancer Screening Navigator works with our community partners and identifies individuals who are not up-to-date on their breast cancer screening. This navigator offers assistance to remove any barriers to care and guides patients to the appropriate screening examinations — such as mammography and, for some, breast ultrasound.
  • If cancer is found, our Patient Care Navigator assists you in obtaining the medical information, pathology slides, and radiology results needed for your consultations and care; facilitates the scheduling process for appointments, tests, and follow-up care; acts as a liaison between you and your medical team during your treatment; and refers you to community resources.

Our Approach to Care

Your team includes cancer care professionals whose mission is to support you throughout your care, at every stage. These services are available to you from the moment you walk through our doors until long after you have completed cancer therapy. Your team meets regularly to discuss your case, combining their expertise to identify areas where we can offer more support. We also communicate with your primary care provider throughout your care to ensure he or she is continuously aware of all aspects of your treatment.

Genetic Counseling and Testing

Genetic counselors are specially trained to assess your history, recommend and arrange for genetic testing, and advise you about steps you and your family can take to reduce your risk of developing cancer or increase the chance of finding it early. To learn more about genetic counseling at NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester (formerly Lawrence Hospital), call 914-787-3100.

  • During a session, the genetic counselor will carefully review your family history, including relatives who may have had cancer.
  • The counselor will then make recommendations about genetic testing. He or she will explain what the testing is and how you might benefit. The choice to have genetic testing is yours — it is entirely voluntary.
  • If you choose to have genetic testing, we can perform the tests for you.
  • If we learn that you have an increased risk of cancer, either due to your family history or to genetic testing results, the counselor will advise you about ways to reduce your cancer risk or find it earlier — such as having mammograms earlier and more frequently than someone who does not have an elevated cancer risk.
