Clinical trials, also referred to as clinical research studies, evaluate new treatment and diagnostic approaches. This form of cancer research is the safest and most effective way to discover new therapies and treatment interventions to improve overall health outcomes. Clinical trials are conducted for many reasons, including determining if a new agent or device is safe and effective for people to use, to discover new ways of using existing treatments, or to compare treatments to evaluate which is better. Virtually every advance that exists in medicine stems from clinical trials, as this process is an essential part of moving the medical field forward and developing new treatments to provide better care for patients. Clinical trial volunteers not only play a critical role in gauging the effectiveness of new therapies and treatments, they often gain access to treatments that are not available elsewhere.

Our physicians and research teams are dedicated to the pursuit of breakthrough research, and the safe and ethical management of clinical trials. During our multidisciplinary tumor boards, physician experts across specialty areas discuss the treatment and progress of individual patient cases and make recommendations based on whether patients might benefit from participating in a clinical trial.

With the Meyer Cancer Center at NYP Brooklyn, our patients are able to participate in trials involving precision medicine. Precision medicine uses tools, such as genetics, genomic sequencing, and clinical data, to inform physicians of both the treatment and the prevention of genetic-related diseases. The insights point to specific genetic alterations that recur from patient to patient and that may be targetable with existing or new drugs. In growing number of cases, we can anticipate how a patient might respond to a particular drug or drugs combination.

We are a regular participant in various National Cancer Institute (NCI) trials and is a designated site for the NRG Oncology Group. The NRG Oncology Group brings together the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, and the Gynecologic Oncology Group — each recognized internationally as a leader in cancer research. We are also a member of the prestigious Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology.
