Breast Imaging

Our Radiology Department is accredited by the American College of Radiology and provides comprehensive breast imaging services. Our specialists offer digital and 3D mammography, breast ultrasound, and breast MRI for breast cancer detection. Additionally, our interventional radiologists conduct on-site biopsies using stereotactic, ultrasound-guided, and MRI-guided techniques when further analysis is needed.

Facts and Figures on Breast Health

Breast cancer affects around one in eight women in the United States, underscoring the importance of screening for early detection and treatment. While a new breast lump is the most common symptom, other signs like nipple discharge, inversion, or skin changes should be noted. Family history, ethnicity, and genetics influence risk. Women of average risk should start mammograms at 40, preceded by a baseline at 35. The American College of Radiology recommends that all women undergo breast cancer risk assessment by 25 is recommended, especially for those at higher risk, including Black, Asian, Hispanic, and Ashkenazi Jewish women.

What To Expect

How to prepare for Mammography

  • A screening mammogram typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes and involves four images taken with brief compression per image. Diagnostic mammograms are necessary for breast changes, history of cancer, or when follow-up is needed. Further tests such as additional mammograms, ultrasound, or breast MRI may be recommended if any concerns arise during examination.
  • Don’t use deodorant before your mammogram. Avoid applying deodorant, antiperspirants, powders, lotions, creams, or perfumes to your underarms or breasts before a mammogram to prevent confusion from metallic particles appearing on the images. Wipes will be provided if needed.
  • Drop off your prior mammogram images or bring your prior mammogram images. For new patients at NYP Hudson Valley for mammograms, please bring prior mammograms on a CD and imaging reports before your appointment. This ensures sufficient time for uploading. If unable to drop off in advance, arrive at least 30 minutes early. This enables the radiologist to compare past and new images, addressing any prior concerns.

What to expect for Breast Ultrasound

  • Breast ultrasound supplements mammography for patients with dense breast tissue but doesn't replace it. During the procedure, the patient lies flat while the technologist applies warm gel on each breast and takes multiple still photos for radiologists' interpretation.

What to expect for a Breast MRI

  • Breast MRI typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes and is advised for those at high risk of breast cancer due to family history, genetic mutations, or prior diagnosis. Your healthcare provider assesses your candidacy based on individual risk factors. Organizations like the American Cancer Society, American College of Radiology, and Society of Breast Imaging recommend screening MRI for women with a 20% or greater lifetime risk.
