NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center has opened its new Irving Radiation Oncology Center, part of the medical center's Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. The 12,500-square-foot facility provides leading-edge precision radiation therapies and the most advanced diagnostic imaging for children and adults with cancer.

Surgeons at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center performed the first Total Artificial Heart implant in the New York City area to replace a patient's dying heart.

On August 15, 2013, the New York City Department of Education announced plans to develop a Career and Technical Education High School with Early College (grades 9-14) program, in collaboration with NewYork-Presbyterian, Microsoft and the City University of New York. The school, which will open in Manhattan in September 2014, will focus on the intersection of health care and information technology. Classes will emphasize computer information and systems management as students train through internships for health care-related technology careers with Microsoft systems and acquire experience in New York-Presbyterian Hospital's information technology operations.

Dr. Ali G. Gharavi, a leading kidney disease researcher, has been appointed chief of the division of nephrology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Gharavi, also an associate professor of medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and director of its renal physiology and pathophysiology course, joined NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia in 2003.

For the 14th consecutive year, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital earned a spot on U.S. News & World Report's prestigious "Best Hospitals" Honor Roll, published online today. The hospital ranks No. 6 on the Honor Roll, which recognizes national excellence in multiple specialties. Only 17 hospitals out of 5,000 nationwide were included. In addition, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital again earned the top spot among all hospitals in New York state and the New York metro region.
