NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center celebrated the opening of the Barbara Walters Acute Care Treatment Center on October 1. Supported by a $10 million gift from broadcast journalist and television personality Barbara Walters, the Barbara Walters Acute Care Center will provide access to specialized treatment for critically ill patients in Washington Heights-Inwood and across the New York metro region. The center is a cornerstone of the new Morgan Stanley Adult Emergency Department, located at 168th Street and Broadway in Manhattan.

Vascular surgeons at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center are investigating the use of custom-designed stent grafts for the treatment of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms—a potentially deadly enlargement of the main artery carrying blood from the heart to the body and vital organs—for patients deemed high risk for open surgery. The FDA-approved clinical trial aims to address the unmet need for minimally invasive stent graft devices that can provide a safe and effective treatment for patients with aneurysms located in the aorta in both the chest and abdomen. No stent graft treatment is currently commercially available for these patients.

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is participating in a national multicenter trial to evaluate the Sentinel Cerebral Protection System (Sentinel), a medical device designed to prevent stroke in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The trial will assess Sentinel’s ability to capture embolic debris—calcified plaque built up in the arteries that can cause brain lesions or stroke—in the bloodstream.
