Researchers from Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), NewYork-Presbyterian, the Pediatric Cardiac Genetics Consortium, and the Pediatric Heart Network have found a number of genetic mutations that explain why many children with congenital heart disease also have other significant health challenges, including neurodevelopmental disorders and other congenital problems.

NewYork-Presbyterian has appointed Daniel Barchi, a renowned expert in the use of technology in health care delivery, as its new chief information officer, effective December 1. He succeeds current CIO Aurelia Boyer, who is retiring.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center have received a four-year, $8.56 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) /National Institute for Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) for a new, clinical trial examining Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

Dr. Ojas Shah has joined NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center as chief of the Division of Endourology and director of the Comprehensive Kidney Stone Center, effective October 1. He serves on the faculty of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he is currently a professor of urology.

An alarming 45 percent of women don’t know that heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. At this year’s American Heart Association Scientific Meeting in Orlando, Florida, Dr. Holly Andersen, director of education and outreach at the Ronald O. Perelman Heart Institute at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and medical advisor to the Women’s Heart Alliance (WHA) will present results of the first survey of its kind to address women’s heart health awareness.

Dr. Paul N. Casale has been appointed executive director of NewYork Quality Care, the Accountable Care Organization (ACO) of NewYork-Presbyterian, Columbia and Weill Cornell Medicine. He joins the ACO from Lancaster General Health/Penn Medicine, where he served as chief of the Division of Cardiology and medical director of quality.
