NewYork-Presbyterian today announced it has received an extraordinary $75 million gift from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation to establish a new, state-of-the-art hospital for pre- and post-natal care. The Alexandra & Steven Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns will be housed in the David H. Koch Center at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell campus and is expected to be open to patients by 2020.

The Sohn Conference Foundation today unveiled The Sohn Precision Medicine Program at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). Funded by a $1.5 million grant provided by The Sohn Conference Foundation over approximately a three-year period, the Program will provide high-risk pediatric cancer patients in New York City access to state-of-the-art genomic sequencing technologies.

New York ranks 50th out of 50 states with regard to the percentage of residents registered as organ donors. There are many myths and misconceptions about organ donation that prevent people from becoming donors.

A new study presented at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) conference shows improved one-year outcomes for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) compared with surgery in intermediate risk patients utilizing the SAPIEN 3 valve. The study, co-authored by researchers from NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, is simultaneously published in this month’s The Lancet.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a viable alternative to traditional open heart surgery for patients with severe aortic stenosis at intermediate risk for surgery, according to results from the Placement of AoRTic TraNscathetER Valves (PARTNER) II Trial. Researchers from NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center will present the study’s results as part of the late-breaking clinical trials at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) conference this weekend in Chicago. The study has also been published online in the New England Journal of Medicine.

NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia is one of four centers in the country participating in a clinical trial to assess a potentially groundbreaking procedure that uses a new device to treat faulty/leaky heart valves, specifically tricuspid regurgitation. The hospital was the first in the United States to successfully perform the procedure.
