The Phyllis and David Komansky Center for Children’s Health of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center Hosted its annual prom, featuring New York-themed festivities on Saturday, June 4th. Nearly 120 teenagers—in both inpatient and outpatient care—and their guests celebrated their triumphs and fulfilled their rite of passage of attending prom. Professional hair stylists, makeup artists and manicurists pampered the teens and provided a full salon treatment prior to the event. The ladies were dressed to impress in prom gowns courtesy of Century 21 Department Store, a NYC icon for more than 50 years. The gentlemen also were fitted for tuxedos provided by Men’s Wearhouse- the go-to destination for prom and formalwear expertise. All prom guests walked the red carpet and posed for prom photos upon entering their big city-inspired affair. The event also included dinner, dancing and surprise giveaways.

Adding a novel monoclonal antibody therapy to traditional chemotherapy increased median survival by nearly a year in patients with advanced sarcoma, a lethal soft-tissue cancer. Findings from a multicenter clinical trial of the combination therapy, led by researchers at Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian, represent the first appreciable improvement in sarcoma outcomes in decades.

Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) has received a $58.4 million grant from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to expand its work in translational research—a multidisciplinary effort that aims to speed the discovery and development of new medical therapies. This grant is the third and largest Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) bestowed on the Herbert and Florence Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, a partnership of CUMC and NewYork-Presbyterian.

Joe Ienuso has been named NewYork-Presbyterian’s group senior vice president of facilities and real estate, effective August 1. An experienced and effective leader in facilities management, Mr. Ienuso joins NewYork-Presbyterian from Northwell Health, where he was senior vice president of capital and financial operations.

Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), the leading nonprofit organization working on behalf of the 15 million Americans with food allergies, today announced the expansion of the FARE Clinical Network, which now comprises 28 centers of excellence across the country. The FARE Clinical Network, dedicated to changing the face of food allergy care, is the only collaborative network of its kind.

Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and Weill Cornell Medicine, in collaboration with NewYork-Presbyterian and NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, have been awarded a grant from the NIH for approximately $4 million in fiscal year 2016 to enroll participants in the Cohort Program of President Barack Obama’s Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI)—a large-scale research effort to improve our ability to prevent and treat disease based on individual differences in lifestyle, environment and genetics.

NewYork-Presbyterian has received two grants totaling more than $3.75 million from the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute for its continued efforts to prevent HIV/AIDS in at-risk youth. The funds will be disbursed over five years, starting July 1, for comprehensive health programs targeting at-risk populations in New York City.
